Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ignite Adult Learning Corporation?2024-05-06T21:38:08+00:00

We are a registered charity that is funded by the Ministry of Immigration and Career Training, as well as generous corporate and private donors, to provide education and training to adults who haven’t finished high school.

What is an Adult 12 diploma?2024-05-07T00:11:55+00:00

An Adult 12 diploma is a grade 12 diploma for adult learners. As adults, you only need to complete 7 classes (credits) instead of the 24 credits expected of high school students. Post-secondary programs recognize it as a grade 12 diploma.

What happened to the GED?2024-05-07T00:12:01+00:00

The GED was used as a high school equivalency in Canada until May 3, 2024. Canada did not renew the contract with the American company Pearson VUE that owns the GED and, as a result, Canadians can no longer get a GED.

What about the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC)?2024-05-06T21:38:48+00:00

Alberta has developed a new high school equivalency test called the CAEC. Ignite does not offer CAEC preparation classes because we believe that our students will benefit more from getting an Adult 12 diploma. More information about the CAEC can be found at https://www.alberta.ca/canadian-adult-education-credential.

Why do I have to write entrance exams?2024-05-07T00:30:32+00:00

Everyone must write the entrance tests. These tests help us figure out the best starting point for you to begin your education with us. There is no need to study for these tests. While our Adult 12 program is taught by our amazing teachers, not everyone who applies is ready to jump right in. Depending on when a person left school, and how long a person has been out of school plays a big part in where a person will start. Think of the Pre-Adult 12 part of the program like doing grades 10 and 11 before jumping right into grade 12!

Can I do the program online from home?2024-05-07T00:28:15+00:00

No. Our programs are in-person only.

Can I do the program part-time?2024-05-06T21:43:14+00:00

The Pre-Adult 12 program is part-time (Monday, Tuesday & Friday). The Adult 12 program is full-time (Monday to Friday).

What if I only want my Adult 12 diploma?2024-05-06T21:43:42+00:00

Our programs include classes that help you develop communication, life, and job skills, develop resiliency, and build positive connections with staff and other students. These classes are mandatory.

How much does it cost?2024-05-07T00:28:24+00:00

The Pre-Adult 12 and Adult 12 programs are free.
